N. Europe 2017 II Northern France

01-05
After the established, a long walk with Hara, a Coffee and the Preparation of the trip, we started for the passage to France.
The cosmopolitan "Biarritz" and "Bayonne" were overtaken because We had visited it - not stay - on a previous trip...
First, visit and overnight at Lake Biskarrosse and visit the nearby beaches

The route after climbing the border and the first kilometres comfortable on a 2-lane road per direction - no toll - with moderate traffic.
In camper stop, Automatic machine, only. card 6,50 €, and 8,00 € in the season with all the benefits + 220v + WiFi
44.43122, -1.16640

I did not go in, not because of economic reason but due to season and wilderness, I just park there without anybody annoying me.
I used in the morning the free one hour of parking, to put water and empty grey, chemical.
Certainly, in the seasons it will be a waste! Now all closed but it was the best time to enjoy the sand dunes together with Hara - they have forbidden plates for dogs on the beaches everywhere - while they are allowed in pubs, I also saw a dog in a restaurant!!!

02-05
Departure for "Bordeaux", only a few kilometres but there was a  long convoy of trucks I have never seen it on my trip !!! The only time that all the IX and Van are the motorhomes was permanently in the left lane with what this entails...Approaching to Bordeaux, the convoy began 15 km before!!!

The pre-determined parking point was from 19:00 to 09:00 and I paid for 3 hours 4,10 € !!! The ride of joy right next to the huge riverside park. It is on the banks of the river, opposite the historic centre.
44.8449, 0564583

Just over 900 meters is the bridge "Pont de Pierre"

which you are crossing to enter the gate "Porte de Bourgogne"

in the historic centre. you need a bike or be trained in walking...
At the beautiful historical centre, like all,  the most interesting sights are the churches...
The Basilica of "Saint-Michel " Gothic-style church with a distinct bell tower - 114 meters hight!

 Cathedrale Saint-Andre

Here is one of the largest squares in Europe "Esplanade des Quinconces" transformed into a huge flea market

03-05
A Visit to 'Cognac' the city where the cognac was born!

Free camper-stop, limited, under large trees, but also with water, emptying grey, chemical and clean public toilets...
for the walk of Hara its the bed river at 100 meters

The historic centre and the Chateau de Cognac (Otard Distillery) which has since belonged to the same family!
Also Hennessy Distillery - both offer a guided tour visit at their facilities - just a short walk away!

Just passing a bridge...

The visit to the Otario Distillery Temple is required despite the € 11 entrance, tour, and test (2 glasses of cognac) - since for 1 cognac at a cafe bar, I paid 5 € ...

from early the afternoon the roads become empty...
In the historic centre and in the one, open cafe-bar,
Inside because of the cold after 10:30 - they accepted Hara in- I was the oldest one with a big difference!

Departure loosely for "Nantes" where we arrived in the afternoon. I can not find a position to park for the night! I had the wrong coordinates...
In the parking lot near the historic centre, you can not park not even a small car...
I slept in a street parking outside the cemetery free of charge from 19:00 to 09:00 until 12:00 4 € and from 14:00 until 17:00 The Park for Hara's walk, very far away ...
46.64580, 7.7305
Visiting externally- closed due to time- the "Shateu des Ducs de Bretagne", museum today in 32 rooms and 850 objects...
Half a kilometre ride in his ramparts!
night walking in the historical centre...

05-05
At the morning departure for "Vannes", a beautiful small medieval town - the historic centre - parking in the 'harbour', channel, I would say, 10 minutes walk from the gate of the historic centre.
At the edge of the road, a sign,  prohibitive car more than 1.80m wide! That I had never seen before...
Right next to a park along the canal, exactly what we need for the walk of Hara!
47.64352, -2.76020

I Ride the bike in the old town,
the cathedral, beautiful houses- that if not all turned into tourist shops- make you feel like walking in the Middle Ages, which is partly happen when they close and the streets get empty!

06-05
A Visit at "Carnac" (Alignement de Kermario) to see one of the biggest in the number of parts neolithic menirs.

The parking lot.
47.59652, -3.06614

It is located between "Vannes" and the holiday in 'Quiberon' It is divided into two areas, the village, and the beaches 5 on the number.
Here is "Grande plage"

After the walk on the beach, we returned, in 100 meters before parking, space for cambers under the shade of large trees for noon...

Afternoon on the way to 'Quimper' Again, it was useless to stay overnight as it was a central car park in the centre and next to the River. We hardly parked after a bicycle in the historic centre. There is not much to see...

it was still daylight so we decided to drive a few more kilometres to 'Landerneau'
where the camper stops is by the river but without any view and 6.30 € of all plus 220v
Here the only attraction is old some houses built on a kind of a bridge...

07-05
Departure for "Roscoff" with a stop at "Morlaix" on a stunning camper stop,100 meters from the centre of the old town

 the "Hotel de vile"

And the construction that reminds of Roman hydraulic work is a pedestrian bridge on the first level - the city is developing around the hills - and for the train is the highest level!!!

The old centre is below where there is also a harbour on the river...

Something important! Mostly in Brittany at least the tables are occupied parking places and not the sidewalk!!!

Parking free for camber in the huge harbour, "Roscoff", no service and Hara's ride happens in a huge parking space...
Not good place at all, noise, plus the huge boat early in the morning next to us, although we did not see it due to fog!
48.71895, -3.970691

The nearest to see and walk, the old port with the old lighthouse,

to stare at the old houses on the main road,

maybe a walk in a huge, long, jetty to nowhere ...

Sunset in 'creeper' - a crepe and two glasses of wine 16 € - again the only customer was me- and returning through a deserted city...

In the morning I  checked and the second camper stop on the other side of the city.
48 ° 42.717 3 ° 59.960

Good and quiet location, a short walk to the centre. Next to a tower but just out of the village, with enough campers. Right on the beach - when it is seawater, because of the tide - my first experience - incredible how much distance from the coast leaves the water !!!

The same rocks...

08-05
We reached Castle 'Latte' on the tip of a cape, one of the most touristic parts of Brittany and we found a small car park...
We went down an unbelievable downhill walk, enter fee 5.5 €, by luck we went to the tour in English (only at 15:00). We were slightly puzzled that although it is a certified national monument the 'home' inside is private!!!

So we photographed it and we left for a beautiful harbour 'Le Port Niex Plevelon' - where we had marked it when coming - for a late lunch and siesta...
48.62795, -2.32107

Here's my first real touch with the tide. The sea covered the space in one hour! a huge bay!!!

Afternoon in 'Saint-Malo' another beautiful city,

we did a small car ride, but due to fatigue, we continued for a few miles in a small village-town called 'Doll' with a decent free camper stop with facilities, water, grey, chemical, and a park for Hara at 50 meters.
I forgot to write that in the parks I mentioned, even on the banks of rivers, there were bags - not empty cases - and buckets specifically for dog pu.

Sightseeing, and the main street with cute medieval houses.
A huge for such a small-town church

09-05 Mont-Saint-Michel Camper stop, Automatic machine, by card only. In the summer there is a reception too...
12 €, water, empty grey, chemical, WiFi. Very beautiful, huge lawns and partitions of shrubs. 48.61478, -1.509005
bus stop - without a ticket - for the islet... Beautiful, multi-photographed and highly touristy. the village inside the castle every house and shop, a waste of people!
I did not visit the abbey not only because of my schedule but also of my aversion to These terrible churches. Huge and inhuman we imagined at that time
the influence they had and the terror, not the awe they caused to the people!
Island and not, this two because of the tide in the morning is on land and in the afternoon becomes an island!

10-05
We started late because the mileage was very little, through a very good double lane road and a little bit on rural roads.
Here, I would like to tell you that all the way up to now, I did not see an inch of uncultivated land other than meadows with several cows...
Arrive at Fougeres' lunch at the camper stop, just at the main attraction of the castle "Chateau de Fougeres"
Beautiful camper stop with all the amenities with beautifully landscape places and some shadow...
48.35525, -1.21115

Just next to the Park for Hara's walk and a small lake that did the diving exercises the firefighters
... the afternoon was closed.

After lunch and a great siesta, we returned with Hara through well-marked route at the small town. Sightseeing outside of the castle,

the Theater, the church - what else - and the gardens through which you go back to the castle - you have in the meanwhile you have to climb an incredible uphill street - through the old, medieval piece of the city.
A glass of wine on the return to the castle and we reached our house 5 minutes before the rain...
night walk

11-05
With a stop at the "Chateaugiron", it was on our way and a visit to the castle, as well as wandering in the small beautiful city.
The "Chateau"
Arrive for lunch in 'Angers', right in the huge parking area, with specially marked places for campers.
at square  "Rochefoucald" down and just next to the river.
47.47667, 0.55679
The beginning was made by a ride of Hara at Riverside and a glass of house wine overlooking the "Chateau" which is also the main attraction.
The following morning the tour in the city was made by walking for several hours walking...

12-05
The castle
The cathedral, (Saint Mauritius).
Coffee in the "Saint Audin" Tower, The theatre, with a sudden rain...
even beer is paid by a card!
 “LAlcazar”…

13-05
The ride start for an outdoor visit to the Chateau of the valley, it started with a key criterion for the photo from the Wikipedia and the tips of the tourist information offices.
Anyway, I was not going to pay the expensive tickets to look at ita tribute to the big landowners of the time! From the first visits that I was so sad at the thought of how many people suffered to build these buildings just for the vanity of some others...
1) "Chateau de Brissac"

Parking in a beautiful spot by a river next to it, but on the other side the train...
However, an overnight stay is allowed, but without benefits.
Where it shows the motorhome it was impossible to approach! The football stadium, Sunday with a match on...
The little fortified old town, you turn it fast, a few interesting things ...
The gate to the castle
The Chateau
The cathedral
And another fortified Chateau
from the road
End of the day in the Grosse Greve municipal campsite
47.48483, 1.19463
With incredible prices !!!

At Riverside with terraced trees,
incredibly clean with new facilities...

15-05
Blois
A short stop in empty parking - without a parking meter from 12:00 to 14:00 plus one hours, next to the Chateau
I had booked a camper stop 7 € a day with water and toilets, I would not stay, so not visit it ...
47.586521, 1.32658
The Chateau

from across the river

and this is part of the view too...

The Welcome to "Meung-Sur-Loire"
Next to a park in the river!
47.82350, 1.44461

with the Chateau

And his church

It may not be Chateau but the door...

16.05
on the way to "Chateaudun" where I would meet and spend the night with a couple of friends.

The end of the Chateau!
I have seen pretty much for my whole life!

17-05
On the way to Paris
Purple Flowers - Endless Areas...
A stop in Versailles,

Huge, torn trees entering Paris...

The parking for the overnight  in the forest of Boulogne
48.86410, 2.23430

At the orange van in front of me but also in general in the area the "Women" practice the oldest profession...
I do not know if I would decide to stay there without Hara... However, there was no problem in the afternoon walk to the adjacent park where families had a picnic, and nothing was heard at night except for the heavy rain...

In the morning I saw that another daring man had stayed overnight there.
It is worth mentioning that the campsite is just 500 meters - I did not know it - so I went today to charge the battery from the bike as the routes to the centre and the sights are over 25 km.
 40 € a day the camper, 2 people, and 220v.
In my observation that I am alone the answer was
 'the price is fixed" !!!
But when she told me to charge extra the dog I told her that it was the second person! Rather it would be glassing  my eye very much because the answer was 'of course, but no problem'...

With Paris I will not bore you with descriptions and pictures, there are everywhere.
One only, with the bike...

Briefly, it's beautiful, it's expensive, it's in the opulence and traffic chaos!

19-05
On the way again, for Luxembourg, through the French province, the oasis after the chaos of Paris

in the "Reims" a visit to the famous cathedral Notre-Dame de Reims and the historic centre...

A football match and the camber stop in "Reims" was out of order
49.2499, 4.021244

wrong calculations and fatigue later - with the fall of the night I entered a highway with tolls (8 € and about 80 ~ 90km) - it made me overnight in a "Total" before "Metz". a Large parking space, separate from trucks, emptying chemical and grey...
49.17923, 6.05336

20-05

Entry to Luxembourg - the country - and directly to a gas station for oil. The absolute loss of cars - due to the great price difference - I measured 30 pumps and the delay touched the hour!!! if we add the traffic chaos to the motorway the 73 km route takes 2 hours 30 minutes !!!

continue in next post...

ITHACA

when you set out on the voyage to Ithaca,
pray that your journey may be long,
full of adventures, full of knowledge.
of the Lastrygones and the cyclopes
and the furious Poseidon, do not be afraid,
for such on your journey you shall never meet
if your thought remain lofty if a select
emotion imbue your spirit and your body.
The Lastrgones and the Cyclopes
and furious Poseidon you will never meet
unless you drag them with you in your soul,
unless your soul raises them up before you.

Pray that your journey may be long.
that many may those summer mornings be
when with what pleasure, what untold delight
you enter harbors you? Love not seen before;
that you stop at Phoenician marketplaces
to procure the goodly merchandise,
mother of pearl and coral, amber, and ebony,
and voluptuous perfumes of every kind,
as lavish an amount of voluptuous perfumes as you can:
that you venture on too many Egyptian cities
to learn and yet again to learn from the sages.

But you must always keep Ithaca on the mind.
The arrival there is your predestination.
Yet do not by any means hasten your voyage.
Let it best endure for many years,
until grown old at length you anchor at your island
rich with all you have acquired along the way.
You never hoped that Ithaca would give you riches.

Ithaca has given you the lovely voyage.
Without her, you not have verdured on the way.
She has nothing more to give you now.

Poor though you may find her, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Now that you have become so wise, so full of experience,
you will have understood the meaning of an Ithaca.
